You imagine how it is going to be, but then it turns out different. At first I thought I was safe, then I started to worry, then it was all over.

For eight years I worked as a Production Manager in a manufacturing company, going above and beyond the call of duty just to be informed that I was no longer needed. Suddenly I had to navigate through the legal process and formalities as well as the emotions and practical implications of being unemployed for the first time in decades. 

While feeling very sorry for myself, I realised that my situation is not unique. Thousands of people are retrenched every year and with AI and robots on the way, this number will skyrocket. Job losses and retrenchments will be part of the biggest conversation of the next decade, a conversation ultimately about the future of mankind and our reason for existence.

I believe information can add value to a person facing retrenchment, I believe sharing our experiences can support a person going through retrenchment and I believe thinking, debating and reasoning about the future can help shape the conversation we need to have as a specie.
